2026 Call for Submissions
Following the successful rebrand from Due North and the best-selling journal
edition in many years, the Federation for Ulster Local Studies invites submissions
for the next issue of its Journal of Ulster Local Studies.
Why contribute?
This journal provides a platform to:

Contribute to the study of Ulster’s rich and diverse history
We warmly welcome contributions from local historians, independent researchers, heritage practitioners, students and community groups. If you have carried out careful research and have a story to share about Ulster’s past, we would be delighted to hear from you.

What can I write about?
We are interested in articles on any aspect of Ulster’s history, including:

Local studies of towns, villages or districtsPeople from your area (including lesser-known individuals)

Social and cultural historyIndustrial, agricultural or maritime heritage
-
Ulster-Scots and Irish cultural traditions
-
Migration, family and community history
-
Women’s history and overlooked voices
-
Oral history and memories of the past
-
Local buildings, landscapes and archaeology
-
Museum, archive or community heritage projects
Both traditional research and new approaches are welcome- got an idea but aren't sure if we're the right publication- get in touch and ask!
Article length and format
-
Articles should be no more than 3,000 words.

Shorter pieces are also very welcome. Submissions must be original and not under consideration/published elsewhere.

All articles should be clearly written, well-structured and grounded in good-quality research.
References
-
References should follow Irish Historical Studies (IHS) guidelines.
-
Use footnotes rather than endnotes.
-
A full bibliography is not required unless necessary.

Review and editing
All submissions will be reviewed by the editorial team. We may suggest edits to help prepare your work for publication. Our aim is to support contributors and showcase the excellent work being done across Ulster.
